Here at the SikaMut office we celebrate beautiful natural materials, fine craftsmanship and goods of the highest quality. For us it is about combining the best of nature with the stories that bring people together, seasoned with experiences from places where sky, sea and mountain meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is where the salt sea air mixes with the scent of fresh grass and mountain. Where the longings of the heart are allowed to fall quiet, and where peace and calm reign – a place where the clock gets a much-needed break from the hectic times we otherwise live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet Adam. Part of the story.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Adam taught Charlotte to paddle a kayak when she moved to Greenland. Besides being a kayak instructor, running kayak trips and working at the Seamen’s Home, he is also a skilled hunter who knows a great deal about seal hunting. He spends a lot of time at sea and in the mountains and knows many of the good places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the sewing workshops, where generations of experience and craft meet, raw natural materials become sought-after goods that both the hardy Greenlander in Qaanaaq and the busy professional in New York value in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes more than imagination<\/summary>\n
\n

It takes imagination to picture how a piece of wet, greasy hide or a clump of wool full of twigs and grass can be turned into an elegant bag, a beautiful boot or a lovely shawl. And it takes experience and diligence to create quality products that stand up to daily use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes knowledge, skill and respect for mother earth to know where the right hunting grounds are, which routes the animals take on their annual migrations, or simply to be a conscientious farmer. Hunters, fishermen and farmers work every day to make sure that nature, the animals and coming generations get the attention they deserve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

For generations the Greenlandic people have lived in close interplay with nature. Hunting is not about pleasure, but about feeding families and preserving a way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fishing and hunting remain an important part of both the economy and the cultural heritage. Seal meat is a natural food in Greenland – and the skin, which used to go to waste, is now refined with respect at Great Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why sealskin is not only beautiful and warm – it is also a genuine and responsible choice that supports people, traditions and nature in the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

02<\/span>Fish leather<\/strong>The Faroes & Iceland<\/small><\/summary>\n

In the North Atlantic communities – in Iceland and the Faroes – people have managed to turn something as humble as fish skin into an aesthetic and durable material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we know as shiny and wet from the fishmonger becomes beautifully worked fish leather with character, texture and strength. Rather than discarding the many fish skins from the salmon industry, they are refined with care and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a natural material, soft and hard-wearing, with fine patterns created by nature itself. The use of fish leather has deep roots in Nordic traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a heritage we now see carried on by skilled designers who, with creativity and a sense of sustainability, make modern bags and accessories. It is a fine example of how respect for nature and our cultural heritage can create something new and meaningful.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

03<\/span>Reindeer hide<\/strong>Norway<\/small><\/summary>\n

In Lapland’s harsh, beautiful landscape the Sami still live in close community with their reindeer – as generations before them did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reindeer meat is processed and sold, while the hide – a natural by-product – is used with respect. Reindeer hide is soft, hard-wearing and has an exceptional insulating ability thanks to its hollow hairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why it is often used as a ground mat, as seat cushions or in footwear – where it naturally keeps the cold out. A fine example of a life in balance with nature, and of a culture that manages its resources with care and skill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

04<\/span>Muskox wool<\/strong>The High North<\/small><\/summary>\n

Muskox wool is among the world’s most exclusive natural fibres – and among the most demanding to produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Greenland, muskox hides are part of the traditional, sustainable hunt. The hide is cleaned gently and the valuable wool extracted. It is work that takes time, patience and great care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the soft underwool can be used – and it has to be painstakingly separated from the coarse guard hairs that protect the animal against the harsh climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In parts of Canada muskoxen are farmed with the same respect we know from sheep farming. Here the wool can be harvested a couple of times a year without harming the animal. The muskox wool is then turned into some of the finest woollen garments, warm without itching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proof that nature – when we manage it thoughtfully – gives us some of the most valuable and beautiful things one could wish for.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

05<\/span>Lambskin<\/strong>The North Atlantic<\/small><\/summary>\n

Since the Viking age, sheep have grazed the North Atlantic landscapes – in the Faroes, Iceland and Greenland. These frugal animals have adapted to the harsh climate and live in harmony with the nature around them. They are part of our shared Nordic cultural and natural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wool and skins used to be regarded as waste and burned; the sheep were farmed mainly for food. Fortunately that view has changed. Today we see the value of Nordic wool again – a natural resource we can rightly be proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At SikaMut this respect for nature is carried on. Our lambskins are tanned without nickel and chrome – to the benefit of both people and the environment. It is a fine example of how tradition and sustainability can be brought together thoughtfully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

The North Atlantic hunting traditions are built on respect – for nature, for the animals and for the generations to come. The harvest is taken thoughtfully, so that there will still be seals, fish and other game in the waters around us in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, by-products such as skin, fur and wool are carefully worked into beautiful products. Things we can use with pleasure in everyday life, where function, aesthetics and responsibility go hand in hand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What do I say to my friends?<\/summary>\n

Tell them about the people and the craft behind the materials. Fishing and hunting remain an important part of both the economy and the cultural heritage in Greenland. Sealskin goods are unique – no two sealskins are alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are the stories – about people, animals and nature – that we love to share.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Is it legal to buy sealskin?<\/summary>\n

Seal products from the hunts of Inuit and other indigenous communities may be sold in the EU under the Inuit exemption, when the conditions are met. The products must be accompanied by the required documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our clothes should be something we are proud to wear, and they should stand up to being used again and again. Hides and natural materials are a good choice for the good life – as long as they are used with care for nature and respect for future generations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n
