How do I care for sealskin?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you have just invested in a lovely sealskin product<\/a> and are looking forward to using it – or you are considering it – and are now wondering how best to look after your sealskin so that it stays beautiful for many years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or what to do if an accident happens? Read here about caring for sealskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greenlandic sealskins are 100% genuine natural materials and therefore do not need much care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are, however, a few things you should be aware of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our best advice to you would therefore be: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

#1 Stains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most dirt can usually just be brushed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you have got something messy on the sealskin, wash it off immediately with cold water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always clean in the direction of the hair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the skin air-dry. Do NOT put the skin on the radiator. That will dry the skin out and make it stiff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sealskin must not be washed with soap, washing-up liquid or the like. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It will remove the natural protective surface of the fur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2 Wet sealskin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sealskin footwear can easily be worn – even when it is raining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put the boots to dry near a heat source when you get home, in the same way you would with other footwear that has got wet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the skin has dried, you can brush it up lightly with your hand or a towel to make it look nice again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Really it just has to be looked after the same way you would look after your cat or dog when they come in after being out in the rain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3 Storage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sealskin is a lovely warm material, and its use is therefore seasonal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The very best thing is actually to put it in the freezer when you are not using your sealskin, but there is rarely room there for a pair of boots or a sealskin jacket. So do this instead: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pack it in a fabric bag or cardboard box and put it in a dark, cool place when you are not using your sealskin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not store sealskin in a plastic bag. That will prevent the skin from breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hang your sealskin coat in a garment bag on a broad-shouldered hanger when you are not using it. It helps keep the shape over the shoulders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also choose to let a furrier look after your sealskin coat. They hang it in a room with the right temperature and light, so that the skin does not dry out and go dull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4 Sealskin can change colour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sealskin can change colour if it is exposed to a lot of light. Typically it takes on a slightly annoying yellowish shade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why we recommend that you put your sealskin items away in a dark, cool place <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(but remember where you put them, so you can quickly find them again when it turns cold).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5 Ugly creases in sealskin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you have a jacket or waistcoat in sealskin that has unfortunately been creased or has got a sharp fold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can easily remove the fold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steam the skin nice and smooth again, for example using the steam from a kettle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The folds and the hairs quietly straighten out, and after a little while the skin is completely smooth again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#6 Facts about sealskin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First of all a fun fact: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Sealskin is really just “wrapping from the meal”. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    It is a by-product from the kitchen table. Seal meat is an ordinary food in Greenlandic cooking, and for generations the skin has been used for warm clothes and footwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You should also have some more serious facts about sealskin: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Greenpeace and the EU recognise the work of the Greenlandic hunters and describe it as sustainable hunting. The reason is that they hunt with respect for nature and future generations. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • Seals are not an endangered species. They live a free and natural life without restrictions.
        In the sea around Greenland, biologists estimate that around 15-16 million seals live.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        • According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Greenlandic hunters could catch three times as many seals as they do at the moment without it having a negative effect on the population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
