{"id":19656,"date":"2024-07-07T20:34:34","date_gmt":"2024-07-07T18:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/2026\/10\/first-class-animal-welfare\/"},"modified":"2026-10-28T23:27:03","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T21:27:03","slug":"first-class-animal-welfare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/en\/2024\/07\/first-class-animal-welfare\/","title":{"rendered":"This is also what first-class animal welfare can look like"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#756e62\"><\/span><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-14309\" alt=\"S\u00e6ler i Gr\u00f8nland og Danmark lever det frie live i havet - det er dyrevelf\u00e6rd\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sika-mut.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/sael.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sika-mut.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/sael.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sika-mut.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/sael.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">First-class animal welfare <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal welfare &#8211; what does that mean, some may be thinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyrenesbeskyttelse.dk\/velfaerdsdelikatesser\">The organisation Dyrenes Beskyttelse (the Danish Animal Protection Society)<\/a> has made a definition of that word and believes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<cite><strong>&#8220;that all animals should have access to the open air, be able to feel fresh air, sunlight and grass&#8221;.<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and do you know what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That is exactly how the seals in the sea around Greenland live<\/strong>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK, they do not eat grass, but prawns,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and they spend all day swimming freely around in the sea to find their food, while using their muscles, senses and brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A seal swims around the sea itself to find its food,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and it is busy if it is going to be full every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single seal eats 7 kg of fish a day &#8211; over a year that can add up to about 2 tonnes of fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the life of the seals first-class animal welfare?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It looks that way according to Dyrenes Beskyttelse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hunting and Fishing Department of the Government of Greenland has, with help from biologists and hunters, said that around 15-16 million seals swim in the sea around Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seals are allowed to live in the wild until they are caught by a skilled hunter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is professional and experienced people who catch seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not do it for fun, but to bring food home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In 2016 the Greenlandic hunters caught 121,000 seals out of 15-16 million seals in Greenland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can we call that over-exploitation of nature?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hunters also take the sealskin home. It is not left in nature to rot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sealskin is the bonus catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hunters sell it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatgreenland.com\/\">Great Greenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There the skins are processed in a responsible and sustainable way, so that we can make clothes and shoes from the beautiful sealskins with a clear conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seal hunting is sustainable hunting.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The animals are allowed to live a good life in the wild, entirely naturally.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/en\/shop\/\">Sealskin is a sustainable material for clothes and shoes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Greenland the hunters hunt with respect for nature and future generations.<br>There has to be food for them too, when they are to provide for their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The seal is not an endangered species &#8211;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">neither in Denmark nor in the Arctic.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oddly enough, the seal in Danish waters has become a threat to the fish &#8211; and thereby to our dinner &#8211; unless, that is, we do as they do in Greenland and eat both seal and fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That way you get a good and varied diet while also getting beautiful skins that can be worked into sustainable clothes and shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature must be cared for and looked after &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">that is our duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why we must lend it a hand, with respect for both our planet and future generations of animals and people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honestly:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it not better to catch and eat an animal that has lived an active life in the wild?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know, in a genuinely organic way with plenty of room to romp about and without being fed penicillin and additives, rather than an animal born in captivity &#8211; in a cage, solely with a view to being used for breeding and meat production?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meat has a naturally healthy colour and is free of penicillin residue, so you do not have to be afraid of becoming resistant to penicillin or anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gives you a clear conscience when you eat the meat and use the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That is the side benefit of first-class animal welfare.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Animal welfare &#8211; what does that mean, some may be thinking The organisation Dyrenes Beskyttelse (the Danish Animal Protection Society) has made a definition of that word and believes: &#8220;that all animals should have access to the open air, be able to feel fresh air, sunlight and grass&#8221;. and do you know what?
