{"id":19661,"date":"2024-06-20T22:42:38","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T20:42:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/2026\/10\/oldest-couple-mount-everest\/"},"modified":"2026-10-28T23:29:25","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T21:29:25","slug":"oldest-couple-mount-everest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/en\/2024\/06\/oldest-couple-mount-everest\/","title":{"rendered":"The world&#8217;s oldest couple on Mount Everest ended in drama &#8211; wearing sealskin boots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#778290\"><\/span><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-11089\" alt=\"Mount Everest\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sika-mut.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mount-everest.jpg?resize=275%2C183&#038;ssl=1\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" \/><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grandparents in a Mount Everest drama<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harald and Tone Bergseth are a sturdy Norwegian couple.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 22%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have been married to each other for years, have five children between them and two grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They both have full-time jobs in the Norwegian postal service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like so many other Norwegians they love spending their weekends in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tone and Harald Bergseth happily spend several weeks at a time on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnorway.dk\/rejsemal\/fjord-norge\/hardangerfjord\/listings-hardanger-fjord\/hardangervidda-nasjonalpark\/186811\/\">Hardangervidda (a lovely Norwegian national park).<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sika-mut.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Harald-og-Tone-Bergseth-e1716995381979.jpg?resize=350%2C341&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Harald og Tone Bergseth\" class=\"wp-image-10713 size-full\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A few years ago they had a wild idea.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To carry out that plan they had to spend between 10 and 20 hours in the gym every week, on top of their long weekends in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have a shared passion, which has taken them up to some of the world&#8217;s highest peaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together they have climbed Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres high) in Tanzania and Aconcagua in Argentina, which is 6,962 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In 2015 they made an attempt to climb Mount Everest,<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but that trip was not without drama and mortal fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the way Tone got a loose filling in one of her teeth and had to be flown down to the valley to be treated by the local dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inflammation in a tooth is nothing to joke about at altitude, because it is not very far from tooth to brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her tooth was treated, and Tone came back to Harald. Together they could continue the trip up the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BUT:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale brought their trip to an abrupt halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They tell how, after eating breakfast, they saw snow, ice and fog come rolling down the mountainside towards their camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They thought their last hour had come.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tone took shelter behind the tent, and Harald ran as fast as he could from the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the drama had settled, 19 people had died and many were badly injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Everest was closed off and they had to give up reaching the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They went home, grateful to be alive and with a reminder that nature gives a great deal, but can take it all back in seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In 2017 they made another attempt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to become the world&#8217;s oldest married couple to have reached the world&#8217;s highest point together,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and they succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And to top it all, those tough grandparents are again planning an expedition to the Great Mountain in 2025. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can read more about their plans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toneogleifharald.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here &#8211; on their website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their trip could of course not be done without sponsorships.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of their sponsorship agreements was with the Norwegian company &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/topaz.no\/\">Topaz<\/a>&#8220;, which makes <a href=\"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/en\/produkt-kategori\/uncategorized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some of the sealskin boots Sikamut sells.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topaz had equipped the couple with a pair of boots like these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sika-mut.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/st%C3%B8vler-natur-og-sort-side-by-side-e1631717538893.jpg?w=1000&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"St\u00f8vler i gr\u00f8nlandsk s\u00e6lskind. F\u00e5s i sort og natur s\u00e6lskind\" class=\"wp-image-4788 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tone and Harald were delighted with the boots and used them every day in base camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They collected quite a few envious glances from the sherpas, the people who help the climbers up and down Mount Everest, and from the other climbers on the mountain<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>The sealskin boots were the &#8220;snakkis&#8221; of the whole trip<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p><cite>the couple said when they came back to Norway<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(&#8220;Snakkis&#8221; is a Norwegian expression for a hot topic of conversation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just think about it:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who cast longing glances at Tone and Harald&#8217;s sealskin boots are professional climbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were impressed by their boots in Greenlandic sealskin and lambskin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I take their envious glances and remarks as an enormous stamp of quality on a pair of lovely winter boots, because those people know better than anyone what good boots have to be able to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Sikamut we are immensely proud to <a href=\"https:\/\/sika-mut.dk\/en\/produkt-kategori\/uncategorized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">be able to sell boots of that kind<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you want, you can also get a pair of sealskin boots like that,<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; and now at least you have a fun story about them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harald and Tone Bergseth are a sturdy Norwegian couple.
