Description

Children’s shoes – red and blue in sealskin and salmon skin.

A new and fine favourite for the family’s smallest,

and they can be handed down to siblings, cousins or good friends’ children.

The children’s shoe is hand-sewn in the Faroe Islands, where there is a long and proud tradition of designing beautiful clothes from natural materials such as both sheep’s wool and fish skin.

Practical information about the children’s shoe:

Size and Measurements:

One size = size 21 – 24

No two pairs of shoes are alike since the skins are different. Therefore each pair of shoes has its very own look.

Colour:

Blue – the blue sealskin is beautifully combined with blue salmon skin

Red – the red sealskin is beautifully combined with the red salmon skin.

Good to know about blue and red sealskin and salmon skin:

There are no black, red, green or blue seals in the sea around Greenland.

They are naturally greyish with beautiful dark markings.

But in Greenland we love colours, and that is why we have found a way to dye sealskin in many beautiful colours.

The black colour is the most classic and elegant colour, which many people in Europe have also fallen for.

You will certainly know the salmon’s skin from the dinner table.

It is beautifully silver-glossy with lovely scales.

The skin has been cleaned, after which it has been processed and dyed so that it matches the sealskin in the same colour nicely.

Lining:

The baby shoe is not lined with wool or fleece lining.

Instead, the rough suede side of the sealskin forms the lining in the children’s shoe.

That is smart, because then your child can wear their favourite socks in the house shoe without them falling off.

Sole:

The children’s shoe’s sole is made of soft, black suede, which is slightly non-slip.

The fit:

The children’s shoe is easy to take on and off.

It sits securely around the ankle in a soft and comfortable way with an elastic around the ankle, so it doesn’t fall off so easily.

Most people have no problems putting the house shoe on the child.

Design:

The children’s shoe is designed by and made at the Faroese sewing workshop Fosaa Design, which is located on the island of Streymoy.

Fosaa is known for working with Nordic materials in their beautiful designs.

Salmon skin from the Faroe Islands, lamb’s wool from Iceland and sealskin from Greenland.

Which size should you choose?

The baby shoe is a unisex model and fits sizes 21 – 24.

You should be aware that:

Both seal and salmon skin are soft and can mould to the foot.

Thank you for your interest.

Care of sealskin

Daily use and care:

  • Let the skin breathe: Sealskin benefits from fresh air. You do not need to pack it away if you do not use your sealskin product every day.

  • When the skin gets crumpled: If your sealskin product has become a little flat or crumpled, you can make the hairs stand up nicely again by holding it over the steam from a pot of boiling water. (mind your fingers while steaming the skin)

  • Brush with the hair: You can gently brush the skin with a soft brush. Always remember to brush with the direction of the hair (from root to tip).

Water and stains – When accidents happen:

  • Wet sealskin: Caught in a rain shower? Don’t worry! Shake off the excess water and let the skin dry naturally at room temperature.

  • Minor stains: Gently wipe with a firmly wrung-out, soft cloth with lukewarm water. Always wipe with in the direction of the hair growth.

What you should avoid

  • No direct heat: Do not place sealskin on a radiator, close to a wood-burning stove or under a hairdryer. Direct heat dries out the leather back so it becomes stiff and brittle.

  • Avoid chemicals and soap: Never use stain remover, chemicals or household soap on the skin.

  • No airtight plastic: Do not store your sealskin in airtight plastic bags. Instead choose a cloth bag or put it in a dark place, so the skin can breathe.

Bonus info about fish leather - What you didn't know you needed to know.

Do you want to know the story behind fish skin?

We have gathered a number of facts about the material, which will probably surprise some when you tell them about it.

History, Culture & Circular thinking

  • Pure by-catch from food culture: Fish skin is a 100% recycled by-product from the food industry (e.g. from salmon, cod and monkfish). Instead of letting the skin go to waste, it is transformed into an exclusive luxury leather.

  • From shoes to exclusive bags: Transforming fish skin into durable shoes and clothing is not a new invention at all. History shows that for decades – and most recently during World War II – the enormous strength of the skin has been used for strong everyday products.
  • 1-of-1 unique: Just like human fingerprints, no two fish skins are alike. The pattern and structure from the scales are shaped entirely naturally by nature itself, which gives your product a completely unique surface.

Properties that surprise:

  • 9 times stronger than cow leather: Although fish skin feels incredibly thin, supple and featherlight, it is up to 9 times stronger than ordinary cow leather of the same thickness. This is because the protein fibres in fish skin lie crossed over each other instead of parallel.

  • No, it doesn’t smell of fish at all. During the gentle tanning process all natural fat and protein is removed completely. What remains is a perfectly clean, odourless and strong leather that smells of classic quality craftsmanship.

  • Sustainable alternative: By choosing fish skin you support a use of raw materials that does not require extra agricultural land, feed or enormous amounts of water – the material is already there.

  • Beautiful surface structure: The tanning preserves the fine “pockets” and patterns from the scales, which gives the leather an incredibly beautiful, three-dimensional depth and a feel that has to be experienced with the hands.

Can it really be true that cold feet give us colds?

Colds and cold feet – can it be true? Well, both yes and no. No, because: Cold viruses do not enter the body through the feet. Yes, because: Cold viruses sneak in through the mucous membranes in your nose and mouth – especially when you are cold. And then we are in trouble with a […]
