Baby shoes in sealskin

The classic Greenlandic soft slipper in sealskin –

now also for children in Greenland sealskin and lined with shearling.

Baby shoes in black sealskin are a truly dear little shoe or sock for the family’s newest member.

They keep the little feet warm in the pram, at the childminder’s or at home in the living room, when it is freezing cold outside and everyone’s toes are cold.

Practical information about the baby shoe:

Size and Measurements:

Sizes:

You can get the baby shoes in 3 sizes:

  • 1-2 years,
  • 2-4 years.

Size approx. 2-4 years: approx. 13.5 cm long 6.8 cm wide at the widest point. (With velcro closure)

NOTE:

The house shoe is a 100% handmade product so millimetre deviations may occur in the measurements.

Which size should you choose?

The baby shoe is a unisex model and fits sizes 0 – 1, 1 – 2 and 2 – 4 years.

Please note that:

Sealskin is soft and can mould to the foot.

The house shoe does not support the ankle, as a real shoe would.

Colour:

Black Greenland sealskin.

Inside, the house shoe is lined with soft, black lambskin, which looks great with the red colour of the sealskin.

Good to know about black sealskin:

There are no black, red, green or blue seals in the sea around Greenland.

They are naturally greyish with beautiful dark markings.

But in Greenland we love colours, and that is why we have found a way to dye sealskin in many beautiful colours.

The red and black colours are the most classic colours, which many people in Europe have also fallen for.

Lining:

Inside, the baby shoe is lined with black, soft lambskin, so the shoe is warm and nice to wear.

Sole:

The baby shoe’s sole is made of soft, black suede.

The fit:

The house shoe is sewn in soft materials, so it will give a little with use and grow with the child’s foot.

It sits securely around the ankle in a soft and comfortable way.

It fits nicely around the leg, and there is room for a romper suit and trousers to go down into the baby shoe, so it does not fall off easily.

The baby shoe is easy to take on and off.

The house shoe in size 2 – 4 years has a velcro closure, which must be opened, so it is easier to get in and out of the indoor shoe.

Sizes and Measurements

Size & Measurements (Children)

It is important to us that you get exactly the right size for the child the first time.

Our children’s house shoes are as a starting point normal in size – so choose the size the child normally uses in shoes.

3 good things to remember when you choose:

  • Sealskin stretches: Sealskin is a soft natural material that quickly moulds to the foot. If the house shoe feels a little tight at first, it will stretch and adapt perfectly.

  • Is the child between two sizes? Then we recommend that you choose the smaller size, as the skin stretches with use.

  • Handmade uniqueness: As all our products are 100% handmade, small millimetre deviations in the measurements may occur.

Size guide (External measurements)

Measured from heel to toe on the outside of the sole:

Care of sealskin

Daily use and care:

  • Let the skin breathe: Sealskin benefits from fresh air. You do not need to pack it away if you do not use your sealskin product every day.

  • When the skin gets crumpled: If your sealskin product has become a little flat or crumpled, you can make the hairs stand up nicely again by holding it over the steam from a pot of boiling water. (mind your fingers while steaming the skin)

  • Brush with the hair: You can gently brush the skin with a soft brush. Always remember to brush with the direction of the hair (from root to tip).

Water and stains – When accidents happen:

  • Wet sealskin: Caught in a rain shower? Don’t worry! Shake off the excess water and let the skin dry naturally at room temperature.

  • Minor stains: Gently wipe with a firmly wrung-out, soft cloth with lukewarm water. Always wipe with in the direction of the hair growth.

What you should avoid

  • No direct heat: Do not place sealskin on a radiator, close to a wood-burning stove or under a hairdryer. Direct heat dries out the leather back so it becomes stiff and brittle.

  • Avoid chemicals and soap: Never use stain remover, chemicals or household soap on the skin.

  • No airtight plastic: Do not store your sealskin in airtight plastic bags. Instead choose a cloth bag or put it in a dark place, so the skin can breathe.

Bonus info about sealskin - that you didn’t know you needed to know.

Did you know this about sealskin?

We have collected some facts and secrets about sealskin that tell its fantastic story.

History, the Arctic & Sustainability

  • Seal hunting and the use of sealskin help to maintain a lifestyle and culture that has been built up in Greenland over many generations.
  • The hunting traditions and the recipes for seal meat are passed on to the next generation with pride and joy. Seal meat is a completely ordinary thing to find for dinner in many Greenlandic homes
  • By-catch from the hunters: Sealskin is a 100% natural by-product of the kitchen. It comes from Greenlandic hunter families, where the meat is an important local food source, and where the proud tradition is that the whole animal is used.

  • Recognised sustainability: Both the EU and Greenpeace recognise Greenlandic seal hunting as fully sustainable. The hunt takes place in deep respect for the balance of nature and biodiversity, so the stock remains healthy and strong for future generations.

  • Climate-friendly by nature: Seals live freely in the clean Arctic sea. The material requires neither feed production, farmland nor artificial water supply, which makes it one of the world’s most nature-friendly raw materials.

Properties & Practical eye-openers

  • Water-repellent by nature: Made to withstand ice-cold seawater, sealskin has a fantastic surface where snow, sleet and water simply bead off instead of soaking through.

  • Generations-long durability: The leather under the fur is incredibly hard-wearing. If you take care of it and let it dry at room temperature (never on the radiator), a product in sealskin can easily be passed down to the next generation.

  • Adapts to you: The leather base is incredibly supple. Whether it is mittens or footwear, the skin quickly moulds itself to your hands or feet for the perfect, personal fit.

  • Love of easy care: Sealskin is surprisingly easy to keep. If it gets wet, simply let it dry at room temperature and brush it gently through with in the direction of the hair – and the fur gleams again.
