Care of canvas
Care of canvas:
-
Easy stain removal with cold water: If you get a small stain on your canvas, you can get a long way with a damp cloth, cold water and a little mild soap. Rub gently in circles – avoid hard brushes, so you protect the fabric’s surface.
-
Let it dry in the shade: If your canvas product has got wet, it must dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct, strong sunlight or radiator drying, as it can make the cotton fibres stiff.
-
Give it a shield of wax: Do you want to make your canvas extra water-repellent? You can easily give untreated canvas a thin layer of natural beeswax or textile waterproofing – then the water drops will bead straight off.

Did you know this about canvas?
History, Culture & the Name
-
Named after hemp: The word canvas originally comes from the Latin word for hemp (cannabis). Originally, canvas was woven from strong hemp fibres, before cotton took over the stage.
-
Tested on the seven seas: For centuries canvas has been the sailmaker’s preferred material. It was the heavy canvas sails that drove the ships of history’s greatest explorers around the world – chosen because the material could withstand extreme storms and wear.
-
The artists’ preferred canvas: Besides being a robust utility material, it is exactly the same weave that the world’s greatest artists have painted their masterpieces on for centuries.
-
An ancient workers’ icon: From the gold diggers’ hard-wearing tent cloth in 1800s California to modern luxury bags – canvas has always been the symbol of incomparable strength and timeless design.
Fantastic properties
-
The secret lies in the weave: Canvas is known for its extreme durability. That is due to the special plain weave
(a completely tight over-under pattern), which makes the fabric almost indestructible and resistant to tears.
-
Only gets more beautiful with time: Unlike synthetic fabrics, heavy cotton canvas gains an incredibly beautiful, soft patina and an authentic “patinated” look over time, which tells the story of the adventures it has been on.
-
Wind- and water-repellent structure: When the fibres in heavy canvas get damp, they swell slightly. That closes the tiny gaps in the weave and makes the fabric naturally resistant to wind and light showers.
