A little about reindeer:
In Greenland the reindeer hunt begins in August, when the hunters, often with their families, go out into the mountains to hunt and pick berries.
In Greenland reindeer skin is used as a seat pad on the dog sled, so you sit warm and soft during the ride.
In Norway the Sami have tended large herds of reindeer for generations. They live off their animals.
They sell the reindeer meat, and the skin is tanned and turned into shoes or clothes.
Both in Greenland and among the Sami, reindeer meat is a good dish in the traditional kitchen.
Both peoples can make beautiful jewellery from the antlers, or skilled craftspeople make fine works of art from the antlers.
The reindeer’s antlers are light on the outside and dark on the inside.
That is why there is often a beautiful play of colour in works of art and jewellery made from reindeer antler.
